There are a few reasons why a business may want to move pallet racking, but it’s usually always because business needs change. A business may be moving to a different warehouse, so they need to disassemble and reassemble their pallet racking (i.e. move their pallet racking). A business may be staying in their warehouse but need a new warehouse layout, so they need to move their pallet racking to accommodate. A business may buy new pallet racking to go with their old pallet racking, and a shuffle is needed to fit everything.
Whatever your reason for moving pallet racking, you may be wondering, how big a job is it? Is it easy to move pallet racking?
Easy is a relative term, but all in all, it’s not a difficult job. There are things to consider though.
Pallet Racking Needs To Be Re-Certified
If you move pallet racking, even with the same building, it needs to be re-certified for safety. This means that even if you’ve recently had your yearly pallet racking safety inspection, you’ll need to get it done again. Because of this, it may be a good idea to get your pallet racking professionally disassembled and reassembled. That way you know it’s safe and can be certified.
In the past, we’ve seen businesses assemble pallet racking themselves and then try to get a third party to certify its safety, only to be told there are a number of problems with it accord to AS 4084:2023, causing it to need to be taken apart and basically redone from scratch; all of this wastes time and money. In turn, if you’re looking for pallet racking installation, make e that the company doing the installation is also willing and able to certify it: the installers should stand by their work.
How Will The Pallet Racking Move Affect Your Business?
If pallet racking is being taken down and put back up again, it’s important to understand how this may affect your business. For some businesses and warehouses, sections of racking can be taken down and reassembled, allowing the business to keep operating in some capacity, but in others, the whole warehouse may need to shut down. It’s important to know what your business’ situation is and plan accordingly.
If the business needs to shut down or slow down, when is the best time to do this? Do you need to wait for a quiet period, or do you do a temporary shut down and then work extended hours to catch up later? There’s a lot to consider here, and it will depend on the nature of your business and the size of the job.
What Else Needs To Be Done During The Move?
If your business is moving locations or just shifting its racking, what other jobs can be done that have been put off? Is this a good time for your business to do a stock take? Is it an opportunity to rotate stock or even dispose of old stock that’s just taking up space? Perhaps you do a promotion to try and sell stock quickly while also giving your sales team an opportunity to reach out to old clients?
Don’t think of a pallet racking moving project as just a pallet racking moving project. Consider what else needs to get done, and do it.
