If you run a warehouse, you’re probably aware that there are a lot of different kinds of pallet racking. There’s pallet racking that is good for selectivity, pallet racking that’s good for density, and everything in between. However, storing longer items on pallet racking can be a challenge. Shelving, especially longspan shelving, can often be a good solution for longer items, but may not be heavy duty enough for what’s being stored, may not be accessible to manual handling equipment, and may not have the depth for larger items.
This is where a storage solution like cantilever racking comes in.
What Is Cantilever Racking?

Although cantilever racking is often lumped in with pallet racking in general, it’s usually not designed to store pallets. Instead, cantilever racking is designed to store long items in warehouse situations. In fact, the length of items that cantilever racking can store is almost unlimited – as long as there’s enough space and weight doesn’t become an issue, length isn’t a problem when it comes to cantilever racking.
Cantilever racking is designed with no upright beams that can get in the way of longer items. Instead, the only vertical beam on the racking is at the back of the unit, with supports coming out as a cantilever (hence the name). Furthermore, most cantilever racking doesn’t have any decking, meaning it’s easy to get manual handling equipment like forklifts underneath the goods being stored.
In this way, cantilever racking has a lot of advantages over shelving as well. Shelving can be great for storing a variety of items, even long and heavy items, but cantilever racking can store things at length and weight, and make it easily retrievable.
How Can Cantilever Racking Be Modified?
Like a lot of racking, cantilever racking can be modified to suit its need.
Some items commonly stored on cantilever racking, like plasterboard, easily sit flat on the racking, meaning little modification is needed. However, cantilever racking is often used to store long and round items like piping, which can easily roll of the cantilever arms. Because of this, it’s easy to adjust cantilever racking so the the arms are at an angle, stopping items from rolling off and also making them easy to stack if needed.
Do You Need A New Way To Store Long Items?
If you don’t think you’re storing long items as efficiently as possible, give us a call. Cantilever racking may be your best option, but, on the other hand, there may be something else more suitable for your storage needs. It’s important to consider what’s being stored, how it’s being stored, and how it’s being accessed. We’re happy to provide advice.
